2017 Goals: Resolutions and Reality
Co-owner and pharmacist at Galleon Pharmacy in Hyde Park, Suleiman Mohammed talks about new years resolutions and how they blend in with reality.
It’s February 2017 and I am still trying to get down to the 2011 resolutions. Is it a lack of energy, determination or both? Many of us find ourselves in this precarious position every year. Resolutions made during the relaxed holiday period often tend to be a bit unrealistic.
Being determined to get that superb summer body while taking in the summer sun on the beach can be problematic. Or is it? In order to follow through on a resolution one requires determination and a desire to achieve the end result. A clear mind, healthy body and motivating force will get you there. Diet , exercise , healthy living and maybe a supplement or two.
Diet plays a pivotal role in any health programme. I believe in a mixture of carbohydrates, fat and protein. Carbohydrates are the source of energy for body function. Too little is not beneficial and too much is not ideal either. Depending on the source of information, dietitians and food companies often recommend an optimum amount required for energy.
I believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Dipped Flake. Fats are an important part of the diet as well. They are normally classified into saturated and unsaturated fats. Both are essential for health, but too much of the saturated fat can lead to unwanted cardiac effects. Sources of unsaturated fat include nuts and oily fish. Unsaturated fats contribute to cardiac health. So salmon more often than none is ideal and it tastes great as well! So salmon at a trendy cafe is a stepping stone to resolution fulfillment. Protein is the “Lego” or building block of the body. It is also a source of energy, so it’s senseless depriving the body of the above, when the above is what is needed for that beach body.
Exercise. By exercise I mean exercise within your ability. I know of plenty of people who push themselves to such a limit at the gym that breaking point is reached by Mid-March! Everything in moderation, you have 12 months to get fulfill your resolutions, so why rush? Brisk walking, cycling, golf are all outdoor exercises. Nothing like the great outdoors to clear the head, perhaps trudging up Kilimanjaro??
But most importantly your resolutions must be something that YOU really want. Not peer pressure or social pressure. It’s for you – by you.
